What should a postpartum gift basket include?

A postpartum gift basket is a nice gift that you can give to any mom. Motherhood is filled with so many emotions, so a thoughtful postpartum gift basket is a great way to celebrate any mother. Whether momma is a first time mom or she has a few kiddos already, I’m here to give you some ideas on some essentials for a postpartum gift basket!

Postpartum Gift Basket

The first thing you will need is a basket! You can get a pre-made gift basket online if you are crunched for time. If you choose to go the DIY route, you can find baskets for cheap at local thrift stores. Think about how many items you want to include and get a basket size that is just right. Everyone can use little baskets around the house to hold items. You can also decorate the basket by lining it with some cloth. Get creative or go for a more natural look.

Recovery Items

The first thing that comes to mind for the perfect gifts for moms after giving birth are the essential products for her to heal quickly! There are so many products on the market that can help with a woman’s recovery for both vaginal births and for c sections as well. Check out my blog post on vaginal recovery items to get some inspiration if she didn’t include this in her registry.

Snacks

If momma is breastfeeding or pumping, she is going to need a ton of calories to continue managing her supply (all postpartum mommas need calories). Look into some home made lactation snacks – whether this actually works or not is debated. These are usually yummy cookies or energy bites.

Candy, chocolate, and yummy goodies are always a good option. If you know what she likes, definitely include a few in there for her. These little gestures truly go a long way.

If momma is a salty lover, get her some yummy food you know she loves. There’s popcorn, chips, pretzels, and crackers.

Fun Items

In the postpartum time of motherhood there is seriously such a lack of mom taking care of herself. A lot of moms lose themselves in the daily grind of learning to take care of a new baby. Her favorite skincare product, makeup product, or nail product can be a fun addition to this postpartum gift basket. Relaxation and spa items are also a huge hit for moms.

Postpartum Gift Basket Products for Baby

Clothes

Clothes can be very hit or miss for parents. I would recommend a single or two pack sleeper set that has a TWO WAY zipper. Get a size up – go for 6 months or higher so you know that the baby will be able to use it. Some parents like patterns, others like muted colors. Think about the parents style and try to find something you think they will like but make sure it is easy to put on the baby.

Skip the urge to buy a newborn hat or mittens. Mittens can potentially be too tight for the baby and the newborn might not even fit into a hat. I never used a newborn hat for my baby.

Diapers & Wipes

This is another type of product line that can be daunting to decide what to get. To be on the safe side get wipes and diapers that are fragrant free. If you want to go the extra step, look into ones that dermatologists recommend. This way, if the baby has any skin irritations, these products should still be usable for the parents. My sister in law gave us a small pack of ‘expensive’ diapers that were high quality and it was a size up from newborn. I appreciated this gesture so much because we ran out of diapers and I was able to whip those out for my baby.

Skip Newborn size for diapers because the baby might be too large for them. If you are making the basket after the baby is born and you know that they were newborn size, then you can definitely include a small bundle of newborn diapers.

Miscellaneous

You might think it’s too early but teethers are great additions to a postpartum gift basket. The baby will eventually need a teether and they can be so picky with which one works best for their gums. I personally prefer the teething silicone sticks. My baby loved them and so did my nephew!

Socks are another item that you can include. I would go for a bigger size – maybe 3 months and up. I would always lose my socks, so the more the merrier.
