The BASICS to a Nesting Party for a New Mom

Maybe an expecting mom will want to host her own party or maybe you want to throw one for your best friend. Either way, this nesting party should be an intimate gathering of close friends and family. Because it’s not your traditional party, you’ll want to invite people that the new momma will be comfortable with. After all, there will be cleaning, cooking, and decluttering happening.

Food for hungry tummies

After getting the guest list together, you’ll want to make sure you have the essentials to any fun get together. Food is a must if everyone is going to be over for a little bit. I don’t know about you, but after making food, all I want to do it EAT the food. Not to mention after dusting, sweeping, mopping, and doing more chores, I want to take a little snack break. Snacks, easy to eat foods, or catering will be an easy solution to everyone’s grumbly tummies.

Duration of the nesting party

The duration of the party can be over a couple of hours or longer! It depends on how you divide the tasks and how many guests come over to help. The more, the merrier, but again, a nesting party is designed to keep mom’s comfort in mind. Having your random coworker prep your food or clear out the laundry bin might not float your boat.

Toilet basket Prep

A woman typically will bleed for a few days to weeks after giving birth. Prepping a toilet basket with essentials can eliminate one more thing for her to think about. During the nesting party, ask the expecting mom if she is alright with you prepping one. Some things to include are listed in this blog post. It has everything you’ll need for postpartum recovery. I would include some pads, disposable underwear, a peri bottle, witch hazel pads, and maybe lidocaine spray. Always have the person test out a small patch with the spray before using it in a sensitive area to make sure they won’t have a reaction to it.

Organizing

Other ways to help organize during the nesting event is:

  1. Organize baby clothes either in daytime outfits, pjs, or by size
  2. Have baby diapers neatly lined in a place that is easy to grab and easily refillable
  3. Organize the frozen meals that have been prepped with writing down the item, how to reheat, and the date it was made on an erasable pad
  4. Decluttered areas will have items that need to be put away and re-organized
  5. Have the baby’s room set up for success

Breaking up tasks

When you have a bunch of your family and friends ready to party, tally who is coming. Breaking up tasks during the nesting party will make sure every task gets done. What exactly does the mom-to-be want? Does she really need a freezer stocked full of yummy food? Maybe the expecting momma would rather have her house deep cleaned. She might want anything and everything done.

Breaking up tasks and giving people direction can not only ensure everything gets done, but also that it gets done quickly. Concentrate on the task at hand and then move on to the next. Get the grocery list together and start early on the meal prepping. Bring the tools that you’ll need to assemble some baby furniture. Don’t forget to bring any little gifts to the nesting get together for the new mom. If you want to know what the best items to include in a diy gift basket are, click here! Decluttering

Decluttering an area that is frequently used or a high traffic area can improve mental health dramatically. When she comes back home with her baby, she won’t have the time or energy to clean and declutter a lot of spaces. If you all work together and declutter old mail, unused kitchen items, the junk drawer, the dining room table, and other areas, you’ll have a momma who is at peace with her space.

Meal prep

Dedicate the best cooks to this – seriously. You are going to need some very nutritious foods after giving birth. Proteins, carbs, fat – you’re going to need it all in postpartum. Soups and stews are great options and freeze extremely easy. Put the food in a silicone container to freezer in blocks that make it easier to defrost. I typically will use the silicone containers until they are frozen and then put them in a freezer bag to label the date and what the item is. It’s easy to keep a good rotation of food if everything is labeled.
